Overview
Hanwen Kang holds a Master of Public Policy from the University of Chicago and a Master of Energy Economics from Rice University, following his undergraduate training in economics. His academic interests began with a focus on the economics of energy systems and governance, but have since expanded to examine the intersection of energy and urban development. He is particularly interested in how diverse energy strategies—ranging from nuclear technologies to renewables—can be deployed in ways that enhance efficiency, stability, and resilience. Hanwen’s work emphasizes the role of public policy in integrating emerging energy technologies into urban planning and infrastructure. He views cities as critical spaces where energy choices directly shape sustainability, equity, and quality of life. By bridging energy innovation with urban policy design, his goal is to help create urban systems that are not only environmentally sustainable but also socially inclusive and capable of adapting to the challenges of the future.
